The Woodland Park Zoo is having a contest allowing participants a vote in the names of the three new, female Visayan warty pigs, with each name chosen as a reflection of the pigs’ native habitat on the Visayan Islands of central Philippines. The names entrants can choose among are:
- ADLAW (sun)
- BULAK (flower)
- LASANG (forest)
- MAGDULA (playful)
- BANHAAN (nosey)
- GUAPA (beautiful)
Enter the contest with an official ballot found in any copy of The Seattle Times published between July 22 – August 3, 2012. Vote for your favorite three names, and drop off the ballot at a participating U.S. Bank location by August 4, 2012. The three names that receive the most votes will be chosen, and contest prize winners* will be selected by a random drawing of all qualified ballots submitted. (*See complete entry rules, and a list of participating U.S. Bank locations, on-line.)
Also on-line, see the Woodland Park Zoo’s new snow leopard cubs Shanti and Asha in their video debut! At 10-weeks-old, the cubs currently live in a behind-the-scenes area with their mother (Helen,) can have visits with their father (Tom,) and where they can receive special medical care from the expert team of vets and keepers. See the entirely adorable video on YouTube, and learn more about the cubs’ health progress on the Zoo blog.
For those who really love the snow leopards, and want to learn more about conservation efforts towards saving these endangered cats, visit the zoo on Saturday, August 4th, from 9:30a – 3p. The sixth annual Snow Leopard Day illustrates how the zoo’s partnership can help save endangered wildlife across diverse Asian habitats. Hear from zookeepers and conservationists about snow leopards, Asian elephants, tree kangaroos, orangutans, hornbills, tigers and other Asian wildlife, along with engaging craft projects for kids throughout the day. The special exhibits and programs will be free with paid admission to the Woodland Park Zoo.
