On Saturday, December 16th, at 7:30p, Orchestra Seattle and the Seattle Chamber Singers will perform the holiday classic, Georg Frideric Handel’s ‘Messiah’, at the Seattle First Free Methodist Church.

The celebrated oratorio, ‘Messiah’ has delighted audiences since its initial performance in Dublin, Ireland, in 1742.  For this work, Handel synthesized the best elements of three musical traditions – Italian, German and English – in which he was steeped.  The easy accessibility and glorious variety of the music that results from the confluence of these elements has helped to guarantee Messiah’s survival, as one of the most popular pieces ever composed.

Learn more about the history and influences that went into the creation of this enduring work, performed by OSSCS for four and a half decades so far.  At 6:30p, get the inside scoop from chorister and choral program notes author Lorelette Knowles, before the performance.

This production, and another on Sunday, Dec 17th, at 3p at the Everett First Presbyterian Church, will be conducted by OSSCS music director Clinton Smith.  The tenor is Brad Benoit, with soprano Amanda Opuszynski, mezzo-soprano Melissa Plagemann, and baritone Benjamin Sieverding.
