The City of Seattle has asked for applicants to do paid outreach work to underrepresented communities, as Community Liaisons from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DON.)
In its on-going efforts to push for diversity and participation by all citizens, the DON is seeking contractors connected to cultures and communities that have difficulty connecting with the city and its services. The main tasks of the Community Liaisons are to provide:
- Fair and equitable facilitation to culturally specific community groups (in the native language)
- Planning, organizing and execution of community workshops and events that parallel City-hosted meetings
- Fluency in another language and the ability to provide quality translations and simultaneous interpretation (if applicable)
The Community Liaison position is generally flexible, including daytime or evening hours as well as weekends, and will be compensated as independent contractors. Excellent facilitation skills are a must, and projects are assigned on an as-needed basis.
The DON specifically is seeking people from the communities of:
- Native American
- African-American
- People with Disabilities
- Certified interpreters/translators in the languages of Korean, Thai, Tigrinya, Laotian, Russian, Amharic, Tagalog, and/or Vietnamese
Anyone interested in becoming a Community Liaison is requested to send a resume or short biography, plus two references, to DON_Liaison@seattle.gov or the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Community Liaison Program, P.O. Box 94649, Seattle, WA 98124. For more information about the Community Liaison program, visit the DON website.
