Seattle Public Utilities has sent out an e-notice that a strike by Teamster Union Local 117 interrupted solid waste pickups around Seattle on Wednesday, July 25th – and could continue to do so on Thursday and Friday, although customers are asked to put materials out as usual before 7a.
This affects collections of garbage, recycling and yard waste. Those who missed pick-ups are asked to simply place the waste out for collection on the same day next week. There will be no charge for additional items placed at the curb.
The Teamster Local 117 contract with Waste Management expired May 31st, and only involved recycling drivers, however Waste Management reported that on Wednesday, July 25th yard waste and garbage drivers also stopped collecting. Collections by CleanScapes – which covers approximately 40% of the City of Seattle – were not impacted by the strike on Wednesday.
Under its contract with the City, Waste Management is required to continue services in the event of any disruption, and any missed collections due to labor complications must be collected later in the week, or the following week. Waste Management will not be paid for non-service.
Seattle Public Utilities will continue to provide updates on this situation as needed. For those wanting to learn more, or to find out about collections on Monday, July 30th, call 206/684-3000.
