The City of Seattle survey on the Pedestrian Zone Mapping Project has been extended to March 31st, to allow people time to review materials and answer the survey questions. The materials now have additional information on the topic of minimum floor area requirements. On September 9, 2013, the Seattle City Council adopted rules that put in place minimum size requirements (minimum floor area requirements) for development on lots with a pedestrian zone designation in urban centers, urban villages, and station area overlay districts. The rules were passed on an emergency basis, which means they are only in place for 12 months and are scheduled to expire, unless extended, on September 16, 2014.
The Pedestrian Zone Mapping Project will possibly expand the areas covered by Pedestrian Zones, or P-Zones. These P-Zones – like downtown Fremont – have special restrictions on the types of businesses, parking, and development in the area. The questions on the survey ask about the restrictions currently in place, and those that could be expanded on P-Zones in the future.
