This year marks a major milestone for The Lake Washington Ship Canal, The Fremont Bridge and The Ballard Locks. One hundred years ago these significant Seattle landmarks officially opened – and this summer, we all want to celebrate these transportation and maritime triumphs!
Please mark your calendars for these first few Centennial Commemoration events scheduled:
- May 2017 – History Month at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks with special displays and events presented throughout the month by Friends of the Ballard Locks
- May 2017 – ‘From Ross Creek to the Ship Canal: How The Canal Impacted Fremont’, a month-long display of photographs, stories and maps presented by the Fremont Historical Society in partnership with the Seattle Public Library. At Fremont Branch Library, FREE
- May 13th, from 11a to 1p – Fremont Historical Society Reception, where the public can meet the historians, ask questions and share stories about the display. At Fremont Branch Library, FREE
- May 13th, at 1p – Historian Jennifer Ott will talk on her new book, ‘Waterway: The Story of Seattle’s Locks and Ship Canal,’ co-authored with David B. Williams, and due for release in June. At Fremont Branch Library, FREE
- July 9th, from 11a to 2p – The Centennial Boat Parade will be a flotilla of historic (and newer) boats and ships traveling from the Ballard Locks into Lake Union, through the Fremont Cut, to commemorate a similar parade held during the opening of the Ship Canal on July 4th, 1917. FREE
- July 9th, from 10a to 2p – A Centennial Bike Ride will parallel the Boat Parade, starting at Gas Works Park. Meet up with your bike and helmet, and take part in a guided history tour appropriate for all ages. Find more information on the Cascade.org website. FREE
