This year marks a major milestone for The Lake Washington Ship Canal, The Fremont Bridge and The Ballard Locks.  One hundred years ago these significant Seattle landmarks officially opened – and this summer, we all want to celebrate these transportation and maritime triumphs!

Please mark your calendars for these first few Centennial Commemoration events scheduled:

  • May 2017 – ‘From Ross Creek to the Ship Canal:  How The Canal Impacted Fremont’, a month-long display of photographs, stories and maps presented by the Fremont Historical Society in partnership with the Seattle Public Library.  At Fremont Branch Library, FREE
  • May 13th, from 11a to 1p – Fremont Historical Society Reception, where the public can meet the historians, ask questions and share stories about the display.  At Fremont Branch Library, FREE
  • May 13th, at 1p – Historian Jennifer Ott will talk on her new book, ‘Waterway:  The Story of Seattle’s Locks and Ship Canal,’ co-authored with David B. Williams, and due for release in June.  At Fremont Branch Library, FREE
  • July 9th, from 11a to 2p – The Centennial Boat Parade will be a flotilla of historic (and newer) boats and ships traveling from the Ballard Locks into Lake Union, through the Fremont Cut, to commemorate a similar parade held during the opening of the Ship Canal on July 4th, 1917.  FREE
