SDOT Work On N 34th St Delayed One Week; A Survey On Northlake Retaining Wall

Traffic, including bicycles, will be detoured off N 34th St during the road work at night starting May 10th. Map provided by SDOT

Currently, the Seattle Department of Transportation is changing the road layout on N 34th Street from Fremont Avenue N to Stone Way N.  However, the restriping has been delayed until next week – starting on May 10th.

Overnight (from 7p to 7a, Mon – Thu,) starting on May 10th, existing road markings on N 34th St will be removed, and new striping will be installed.  Protected bike lanes (cycle lanes) will also be installed.  A new traffic signal will also be added on N 34th St, at the intersections with Troll Ave and Stone Way N.  All of this work is expected to take up to two weeks, and will require detours and temporary driveway closures during the work.  On-street parking, along N 34th St, will also be impacted.

Of course, all of the work being done to restripe and change the road layout on N 34th St is weather dependent, and subject to change.  Find out more about this project on the SDOT website (click here.)

Meanwhile, just south of N 34th St, on N Northlake Way between Aurora Avenue and Stone Way N, the retaining wall is crumbling.  The City of Seattle has a survey out, and they need your opinions.  The Department of Transportation is seeking input about design alternatives for replacement of the seawall that keeps the roadway from washing into Lake Union.

A survey is being circulated on repair/replacement of the North Northlake Way retaining wall. Map provided by SDOT, Apr 2021

This retaining wall supports N Northlake Way for vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic, as well as protecting mooring.  The retaining wall ensures the safety of the businesses, residents and leisure users along N Northlake Way.  The answers to the survey will help SDOT understand the needs of our community along N Northlake Way, as well as help with applications for federal funds on repairing/replacing/removing this retaining wall.

The survey should take five minutes to complete, and participants will remain anonymous.  Please also share the survey link (click here,) with anyone who might also be willing to answer it, and anyone with an interest in seeing this project move forward.
