September is library card sign-up month, and a good time for new and current card holders to check out all the innovative, free services available through the Seattle Public Library and specifically at our charming Fremont Branch Library.
Every Seattle resident at least 13 years old is entitled to a library card, and sign-up is free and easy! “The library is much more than books,” said City Librarian Marcellus Turner, “You can check out a wi-fi hotspot, get tech help, attend a business workshop in Spanish, download movies and music, get help filing your taxes and receive librarian assistance 24-hours a day.”
Last September, the Library registered nearly 10,000 people for cards, and currently has more than 375,000 card holders. “A library card gives you free access to so many on-line resources that are currently being offered for a fee,” observed Ross Baker, SPL Foundation President, “The Library has subscriptions to myriad databases and services – such as newspapers – that would cost a person hundreds if not thousands of dollars per year.” The SPL also has partnerships with numerous museums and cultural centers around Seattle, to provide free or discounted entry.
Sign-up in person at the Fremont Branch Library, or on-line through SPL.org For more information about SPL services, you may also call 206/386-4636.
