SPU Tips On Trash Disposal, Including Fireworks

Having unused fireworks around the house - or the vacation place - can spell disaster. SPU offers suggestions for safe disposal of explosive materials. Photo provided by SPU/seattle.gov

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) wants customers to know that garbage, recycling, and food & yard waste collections will take place on a normal schedule Thursday, July 4th, Independence Day.  However, the North Recycling & Disposal Station will be closed.  For those who need to haul items away the South Recycling & Disposal Station will be open regular business hours.

Also, during this holiday, please note that leaving unused fireworks around your house – or summer cabin, grandparent’s place or other recreational shelter – can be dangerous to your children, pets, visitors and the entire structure.

Fireworks, ammunition and explosives are not accepted for disposal at any local Household Hazardous Waste collection site.  Locations for proper, and safe, fireworks disposal are:

  • The Seattle Police Firing Range, at 11030 E Marginal Way S, Wed – Sun from 9a – 5p (206/684-7474)
  • Call Seattle Police Department at 206/684-8980 to have an officer collect them.

Fireworks are banned in Seattle, and not allowed within city limits.  It is recommended that residents do not attempt to transport fireworks, or other explosive materials, in their vehicles.

To find out about disposal of other household hazardous waste, including oil-based paint, cleaning products, hobby chemicals and pesticides, visit the Household Waste website, or call 1-888-TOXIC-ED.

To report a missed garbage, recycling, or food & yard waste collection, call 206/684-3000 (the day after the missed pick-up) during regular business hours, or visit the SPU website.
