The Stone34 building, at N 34th St & Stone Way, will open to the public, on schedule, in August 2014. The construction crews have worked very hard, and are still finishing a few special amenities to the building and landscaping.
The building will open with 33 new, public bike racks, edible landscaping, 8,500 sq. ft. of open, public space, and seating areas with wood benches certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Perhaps more remarkable, the final recycling rate of the construction of Stone34 is 97%, with 1,160 tons of waste diverted from the landfill and back into the circle of reduce-reuse-recycle.
A few other amenities already in place include giant footprints incorporated into the crosswalk that connects Stone34 – and the future headquarters of Brooks Running, and its first retail store – to the Burke-Gilman Trail. Thanks to the City of Seattle Department of Transportation for permitting this whimsical crossing art.
Stone34 also includes ties to the past, particularly trellis and track from the railroad that used to cross the property on which the building now stands. The construction crew came across these remnants during excavation, and they have fashioned them into public seating, and supports for Virginia Creeper and hops planted on the property.
Swing by Stone34 and see how the building, once an ambitious ideal, has become a reality – in Fremont. The new, ultra-green building – developed by Skanska – will open soon! Stay tuned for more information!
