On Sunday, October 23rd, starting at Noon, the Fremont Troll will be given his annual bath – and you are needed to help make it happen. This year, with the Washington State Department of Transportation doing earthquake bracing on the pillars of the Aurora Bridge, the Troll will need more help than ever to make him shine for his birthday, on Oct. 31st.
Want to have a visible impact on the life of a child, after giving only a few hours a week? B.F. Day Elementary School needs volunteers to meet with elementary students twice a week to give basic assistance with writing, math, and reading. After school tutoring requires no real special skills, beyond a willingness to help and the time to give. After school sessions are on Tuesdays & Thursdays, October 18th to April 5th (holidays off!) from 3p – 4:15p.
A painting party of the Aurora Bridge Mural (a.k.a. Bridge Way Mural) has been planned for this Saturday, September 24th, from 10a – 2p. After a few weeks of hard work by dedicated volunteers, not much remains to be done to repair the mural – and then volunteers can work on restoring it.
The Fremont Arts Council will host their 11th Luminata Lantern Parade, to celebrate the autumnal equinox, on Thursday September 22nd, starting at 7p at Green Lake.
The last weekend of September is the Fremont Oktoberfest – one of the greatest beer festivals in the world! Seriously! The organizers, Bold Hat Productions, have the awards to prove it.
However, the festival depends upon the generosity of a huge cadre of volunteers – including you! Particularly on Saturday evening, September 24th, for the 7p – close (11:45p) shift. Fremont Oktoberfest needs pour-ers to get the beer out and keep the festival from having to shut down early.
On Saturday, September 10th, the third public painting party will take place on the Aurora Bridge Mural (a.k.a. The Bridge Way Mural,) created by Patrick Gabriel in 1997. This will be a great opportunity to help remove graffiti and improve the surroundings – as well as building camaraderie among Fremonsters who love this art work!
Labor Day weekend might turn thoughts to Bumbershoot or Burning Man, but this year, seriously, think about how it is the First Friday of the month, on September 2nd, and from 6p – 9p it will be the Fremont Art Walk!
The Fremont Neighborhood Council (FNC) has a Request For Proposals (RFP) for distribution, to locate a media savvy expert able to assist with streamlining their web and social media communications. The project has received funds from a Seattle Communities Online Boost Grant from the City of Seattle’s Department of Information Technology’s Community Technology Program, matched in part by the FNC.
On Friday, September 2nd, the Paul Frank ‘Academy of Awesome’ tour hits Fremont (Winnebago and all) and they need musicians! Along with games, exhibits and contests (plus, the Puppy Prom!) the show includes a stage to showcase the incredible talent among local musicians, who can win the chance at exposure to a nation-wide audience.
