The Seattle Office of Emergency Management reminds everyone that June is Pet Preparedness Month – when it is time to consider the safety of your pets.
- Remember the hot weather rules for pets:
- Keep your pet hydrated
- Do NOT leave pets in the car, even on overcast days
- Keep paws away from hot pavement
- Learn the signs of overheating for your particular pet
This month is also a great time to check on your emergency plans to make sure they include provisions for all members of your family. It isn’t just about including pets in emergency plans – for evacuation or lockdown.
As you assemble your emergency kit, or update it, make certain you have fresh provisions for your pets. (See suggestions at Ready.gov – click here.) Also, make sure your emergency kits include digital records, pictures and other materials that make it possible to identify and prove kinship with your pet after a disaster – and in the frightening possibility of separation.
Finally, if you are seeking more information and advice on emergency preparedness for your pets, FEMA has a Pet Preparedness Video (click here.) The Ready.gov website, an official website of the US Government, has advice available for those who want to make their pets part of their emergency plan!
