Last week, due to the diligence of our neighbors including the eagle-eyed folks at etg coffee (it MUST be the brew!), Fremocentrist was able to help get the word out about the terrible vandalism/theft of the Fremont ‘Center Of The Universe’ Guidepost. (Click here to read the original post.)
Seattle Police were contacted and a detective has told the Guidepost artist that the perpetrator is known to SPD, she has committed similar damage elsewhere and suffers with mental illness. (Click here to see video of the vandalism, shared by Rob Munoz of KIRO.)
In the meantime, the artist has rearranged his schedule to be able to gather materials and open the Fremont Arts Council Powerhouse for a painting party this Saturday, November 17th starting at Noon. Dunn Lumber has offered to donate the pieces for a restoration of this Fremont icon, and several Guidepost surrounding businesses have offered donations towards the project as well.
This is the third Guidepost the artist has created, funded entirely from his own pocket. He has enlisted the help of friends in the past for the fabrication and installation of the art, originally done as an ‘Art Attack’ (click here for a Fremocentrist column on this phenomenon.)
Please consider stopping by The Powerhouse (3940 Fremont Ave N) to either lend a hand, drop off snacks/beverages (this site is on Seattle School District property, so no alcoholic beverages allowed,) or, perhaps, make a financial donation to the artist and the Guidepost Restoration!
“Our art may be stolen and broken, but we will always make more.” – Maque daVis, an Old Troll
Thank you to all the sincere and heartfelt efforts to support this art, its artist, and the community that takes pride in creative expression! The new Guidepost will, with all of our efforts, rise again!!
