Woodland Park Zoo sent out a Wish of a Happy Mother’s Day 2020 to all Mothers, including the ones at the Zoo. Usually the Zoo Mothers get celebrated by visitors but this year, due to the temporary shutdown for the safety of all during the pandemic, Woodland Park sent out photos and best wishes by blog and e-mail.
Each spring, the Woodland Park Zoo has a number of births of precious and adorable critters. The WPZ blog has information on three of these new (soon-to-be) mothers:
This is also a great time to think about first-time mom Olivia, whose son, Hasani, just celebrated his first birthday on May 2nd. Hasani was born with congenital abnormalities in his rear legs and through the hard work of the Zoo staff, along with consulting help from a Kentucky-based equine veterinarian, Hasani had his condition corrected in his first few weeks of life.
The first-time mom, Uzumma, has been demonstrating exemplary mothering skills since the recent birth of her baby boy, with the as-yet-unnamed gorilla baby growing bigger and stronger every day. The temporary shutdown of the non-profit Zoo will strain the savings of this 100-year-old neighborhood resource, especially as the exceptional animal care and veterinary attention the Zoo gives its residents must still continue even as visitors, and contributions, are dramatically down.
