On Saturday, May 14th, from Noon – 1:30p, the Fremont Historical Society will hold its annual reception at the Fremont Branch of the Seattle Public Library System. While this reception will officially kick-off the historic Fremont display, the photos and narratives on several Fremont structures can already be viewed, and will be decorating the library for the entire month of May.
Saturday, May 14th, from Noon – 4p, will be the first volunteer community party for the Fremont Wetland Trail Park. Come out and help other Fremonsters – and anyone with a will to hike and explore nature in the middle of Seattle – clean up and start creating a community-based green space, just south of the Fremont Bridge.
On Friday, April 30th, the B.F. Day Elementary School library hosted an art show that gave students, staff, families and the community a chance to see the collection of paintings and mixed-media work commissioned by Windermere Realty – and created by students.
Only a couple more opportunities exist to see ‘Frankie & Johnny In The Clair de Lune.’ With Friday and Saturday shows this week (May 6th & 7th) and next (May 13th & 14th,) plus a special industry performance on Monday, May 9th, and a single Sunday matinee at 2p on May 15th, now is the time to go see this charming work.
This Friday, May 6th, from 6p – 9p, may well be one of the very best Fremont First Friday Art Walk ever! And how will you know if this is just hype, or wise counsel, if you don’t participate?
On Friday, May 6th, the courageous and optimistic gals from Portage Bay Goods will re-open the store 2 blocks west to the former Fremont Place Books location (621 N 35th) in less than a week. Don’t you want to be there and see if they made it safely?
This Saturday, May 7th, the Fremont Abbey Arts Center will host the Upper Fremont Festival of the Arts (a.k.a. UFFA!) This will be an open-to-the-public, mostly free, celebration with plenty of entertainment for all ages, as well as demonstrations, live music, visual art, and giveaways! Stop by to see what the excitement is all about, at our very own community center!
Local businesswoman, Kim Ricketts, passed away on Monday, April 25th, at the age of 53. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 4th at 3p at St. Mark’s Cathedral (1245 – 10th Ave E). Donations in her honor can be made to 826 Seattle and The Seattle Public Library. Don’t forget – the first-ever Fremont Fitness Festival will launch this first week of May. Participants in the 12-week fitness challenge (prizes for ‘Most Improved’ and ‘Fremont’s Fittest’) will take an assessment, using the President’s Challenge Physical Fitness Test, on Sunday, May 1st at Noon, Wednesday, May 4th at 4:30p, or Saturday, May 7th at Noon, all at Sound Mind & Body Gym.
Fremont landowner, and local character, Arne Vemo, died at the age of 70, on Sunday, April 3, in Palm Desert, California after a day spent enjoying his favorite pastime – golf. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, April 30th at 1:00 pm, at First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach (18354 8th Ave NW, Shoreline,) with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Sharing Alongside (PO Box 33663, Seattle, 98133) or Nordic Heritage Museum (3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle, 98117) in his name.
