Kirby has been in Fremont for a lifetime, as a resident, employee, employer, and playmate. She's served on the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, the Fremont Neighborhood Council and the Fremont Arts Council, and can be seen wandering the Center of the Universe year 'round. Two pieces by Jack Chevalier created in 1987 – ‘Fremont By Day’ and ‘Fremont By Night’ – that once hung in the lobby of the Burke Building, in Fremont, as part of the Quadrant Collection, have relocated to History House of Greater Seattle (790 N 34th).
Beginning Monday, November 1st, the Seattle Public Library system – including the Fremont Branch Library – will implement higher fines on overdue materials.
The daily fine for an overdue book, CD, or DVD will raise from 15 cents to 25 cents a day, with a maximum fine leveled per item at $8. The daily fine for an overdue interlibrary loan item will change from 25 cents to $1 per day, with a maximum fee of $15. An overdue reference resource fine will increase from 15 cents a day to $1 a day, with a maximum of $15.
For the October 2010 general membership meeting, the Fremont Chamber of Commerce hosted a very informative meeting on Liquor Initiatives #1100 and #1105 – up for vote in the November election. Two local, and well-respected, business owners gave their perspectives – Pete Hanning, co-owner of Red Door and president of the Seattle Nightlife & Music Association, and Matt Lincecum, owner of Fremont Brewing Company who worked previously as a lawyer with a specialty in Liquor Licensing.
Starting Saturday, October 16 through Thursday, December 16, grade school aged children can win a chance at a new bike, with helmet and lock, for every three books they read and register at Seattle Public Libraries. Masonic Doric Lodge #92, in Fremont, will once again sponsor their annual ‘Books for Bikes’ program, aimed at inspiring children to read.
Kvichak Marine Industries, located in West Fremont (at 469 N.W. Bowdoin Pl), recently announced that they’ve been awarded a contract to build five more Marine Preposition Force (MPF) utility boats for the United States Navy. This follows Kvichak’s successful delivery of 26 vessels to them since February 2006.
On Wednesday, October 6th and Wednesday, October 13th, from 6p – 8p, at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center (4272 Fremont Ave N) Joshua Sherman, a blackbelt, will lead a 90-minute class in adult self-defense. Best of all, the entire evening’s class will cost a suggested $5 donation.
Friday, October 1st, will be the monthly Fremont First Friday Art Walk. This month, in addition to the multitudinous variety of galleries, shops, offices and restaurants that display art during every Walk, Fremonsters can stroll westward and meet the artists at ActivSpace (700 NW 42nd St). The Department of Ecology and the City of Seattle sent out notices in mid-September 2010 to inform neighbors about another investigation being done at Gasworks Park to determine sediment contamination.
